REVIEW: vive vegan protein bars

I know it is not “Veganuary” anymore, but I am (mostly) vegan anyway, so when I came across this add for a new vegan protein bar, I had to try it. Vive is a brand that offers protein powders, protein bites and protein bars. Recently, they had an offer to try their three flavours of protein bars for free, just paying for postage (2 pounds). I thought this was a great deal to try their products and to tell you what I think of them.

Postage

Conveniently, the bars came in a box that fit through the brievenbus, so I didn’t have to be home for delivery. Normally, you can order the three-piece box for 6 pound or a twelve piece box for 12 pound. The bars looked perfect when they arrived, so nothing negative to been seen thus far 🙂

Ingredients

Looking at the ingredients this bar looks pretty simple, it contains nuts, pea protein, dark chocolate, dates, some starch, salt and chicory fibre. It contains around 200-250 kcal per bar and 10g of protein, making it not very protein rich (like a protein shake), but rather a more protein enriched snack bar.

Ingredients in this bar: Peanuts (27%), Organic Dark Chocolate (16%) (Cocoa Mass, Organic Cane Sugar, Cocoa Butter, Vanilla Powder), Dates, Chicory Fibre, Pea Protein, Protein Crisp (Pea Protein, Manioc Starch), Cacao Butter, Concentrated Grape Juice, Rice Starch, Rice Protein, Sunflower Lecithin, Sea Salt (source: Vive)

Taste and texture

The chocolate on the outside is nice and dark and the filling is nice and crispy from the peanuts, hazelnuts and especially the protein crispies. I do have to say that the three bars taste quite similar, since they do share a large part of their ingredients. Except for the salted caramel I thought that the bars could have done with a bit more salt. I also think that the hazelnut flavour isn’t too pronounced, since it also has some peanuts in it, which I would prefer not to be there.

Conclusion

These bars are a very nice, healthier and more protein rich treat. However, they do still contain quite a bit of sugar and fat (more than protein), making them not a super high protein snack. I do think this is a good way to satisfy a craving for a unhealthy chocolate bar. I also want to say that these bars do not contain palm oil, so if you are avoiding that, these bars would be a splendid option. I think that, when another offer crosses my path, I will order these again!

Have you tried these vegan snack bars? Let me know what you think of them!
